Following on the remarkable success of the Physio family of lenses, the Varilux Physio extensee breaks through with new technology giving your patients extra visual sharpness and contrast with the new Pupilizer™ lens technology.

Our eyes rely on contrast and sharpness to see well. Much of this skill is the pupil's ability to constantly adjust to a wide range of light levels, providing clear and comfortable vision 24 hours a day. Folks wearing progressives will experience some visual challenges in certain lighting environments and many complain about a drop in visual performance.

Varilux focused on pupil changes when creating the Varilux Physio extensee. Most progressive lenses are designed with the assumption that the wearer's pupil size remains constant in all lighting situations. We know this is not the case, as the pupil increases and decreases as light intensity changes. 

This assumption is problematic, as progressive lenses can produce significant levels of high-order aberrations (HOA), which negatively impact visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. When the size of the pupil increases, more high-order aberrations enter the eye due to the larger surface area used in the PAL. All of this impacts the image quality that reaches the retina.

The Varilux Physio extensee accounts for pupil-size variation, maximizing contrast perception and visual performance. This is done through a unique combination of AI-twinning technology and state-of-the-art pupil modeling. Vision scientists have only recently been able to derive a model that accounts for the four main parameters that influence pupil size: age, object distance, object luminance, and size of luminous object. 

The result is a state-of-the-art dynamic pupil model that integrates multiple studies and datasets to describe and detail pupil size variations. Through this technology and modeling, Varilux was able to map dynamic pupil profiles during various activities throughout the entire day, incorporating numerous wearer profiles of differing ages, multiple lighting conditions, several object sizes, and object positions.

Introducing Pupilizer Lens Technology

When patients wear lenses that do not account for HOAs, the sharpness of their vision is impacted and they can experience a halo or comet tail around sources of light. Thanks to pupil-variation prediction, and without any additional measurement, Pupilizer lens technology refines the corrective surface on the back of the lens to reduce HOAs and minimize wavefront distortion. The lens can now provide even more precise correction for each wearer’s pupil dynamics, improving sharpness and contrast inNew Varilux Physio extensee lenses designed with your pupils in mind any lighting conditions.

Varilux Physio extensee is a dual-sided lens, carefully engineered between the back and front surfaces to provide a magnification effect in the near vision zone without impacting the aesthetic of the lens or the overall progressive power. This dual-surface provides a high quality of vision at near to aid with tasks such as reading fine print.

Patients will receive an 18% increase of contrast and sharpness enhancement compared to the Varilux Physio W3+ lens. A 25% increase compared to similar lenses in the market in all light conditions, even in low light.

Varilux Physio extensee Classic Edition

In addition to the new Varilux Physio extensee, Varilux is also releasing a lens called Varilux Physio extensee Classic Edition which has all the benefits of the extensee in a freeform design without the Dual Booster technology.

The Varilux Physio extensee is available in clear plastic, poly, and 1.67, as well as Transitions® GEN S™ and Transitions® XTRActive® New Generation.

The new Varilux Physio extensee Classic Edition is available in clear plastic, trivex, poly, and 1.67. As well as, Transitions GEN S, and Transitions XTRActive New Generation, Transitions® XTRActive® Polarized, and polarized materials.

The launch is today and these new lens designs are available now. Eventually these will replace the Varilux Phsyio W3+ and the Varilux Physio DRx.
