NOW AVAILABLE: Varilux Shift
This week, Varilux® announced the launch of the new Varilux® Shift™ progressive lenses. It is specifically marketed to help ECPs capture new presbyopes who want a premium lens design without breaking the bank. Let's take a look at some of the new technology and what makes this entry-level lens an amazing choice for progressive wearers in a constantly shifting digital world.
Today’s presbyopes switch focus constantly throughout the day, from screens to reading to distance viewing. That makes it increasingly important to recommend a lens design that supports smooth, natural vision at every distance.

Varilux Shift is the new lens specifically designed to meet the needs of today’s presbyopes, taking into account their natural visual behavior. By analyzing millions of wearer data points, they identified clear visual behavioral differences of today’s presbyopes and used AI to predict how gaze declination varies across refractive errors and addition values.
This deep understanding of near vision behavior enabled them to precisely adjust the position of the near vision zone. iComfort™ technology optimizes the position of the near vision zone to better align with the visual habits of today’s presbyopes. This provides wearers with easier access to the near vision zone and makes adaptation easier and more intuitive.
So what does this new iComfort Technology mean for your patients? In simple terms, it helps minimize the swim effect thanks to the reduction of lateral aberration peak. It creates a maximized field of vision by also enlarging the vertical, which helps to create a larger distance zone for better comfort and stability. It also helps wearers access near vision more easily with less head movement, while also supporting smoother shifts between near and far vision.
Varilux Shift is designed to make near vision feel more natural and comfortable for today’s presbyopes.
In short, Varilux Shift is built to match modern visual behavior, deliver smooth visual comfort, and reduce distortion during everyday movement. Vision in today's presbyope is "highly dynamic", requiring approximately 150,000 focus shifts on a daily basis.
A lens design created to better align with natural visual behavior during near vision tasks by integrating:
- Multi-Design by Ametropia: Enhances the lens design and progression length by a wearer’s ADD power and ametropia (myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism).
- Wearer Mode: Ensures wearers receive the correct optical power in real-world conditions by factoring in lens tilt, wrap angle, vertex distance, and eye position.
- iComfort technology: Optimizes the position of the near vision zone to better align with the wearer's visual habit. Making it easier for them to access the near vision zone and make adaptation easier, faster and more intuitive.
Varilux Shift gives eyecare professionals a practical option for the new presbyopes. The design helps new wearers access near vision more easily, shift more smoothly between near and far distances, and experience less distortion during everyday movement. For practices fitting first-time progressives, that means a lens you can recommend with confidence when the goal is easier adaptation, comfortable vision, and a more natural visual experience from the start.
The Varilux Shift technical sheet includes fitting recommendations, power ranges, engravings, and instructions for checking the power. Our Varilux Resource Center has all the latest and greatest from the entire Varilux lineup of lenses in one convenient place. Pair Varilux Shift with your patients' favorite Transitions Gen S colors and the new Crizal Natural Look AR coating for ultimate cleanibility and comfort.
